Camadas Finas I

Centro de Estudos e Ensaios em Risco e Modelagem Ambiental

Campaign Name : Camadas Finas I – Camadas Finas Oceânicas  ao  Largo  do  Nordeste  do  Brasil / Oceanic thin layers off the northeast of Brazil
Objective : Thin layers may extend horizontally for several kilometers and persist for several days to several weeks. The following specific objectives refer to the waters surrounding oceanic islands (Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, and Rocas Atoll) and the continental slope off the Northeast of Brazil: (a) to characterize and to quantify the horizontal distribution of the depth of the thermocline in the study areas; (b) to characterize and to quantify the deep chlorophyll peak associated with the thermocline; (c) to characterize and to quantify the possible thin layers associated with the ocean interfaces on the surface (neuston) and on the thermocline (deep peak); (d) to check whether and how topographical upwellings surrounding oceanic islands and the continental slope affect the vertical microstructure of these oceanic interfaces; (e) to identify patterns of vertical migration and spatial distribution (horizontal and vertical) of phyto-, zoo- and Ichthyoplankton surrounding oceanic islands and continental slope; (f) to investigate the influence of turbulence on the vertical distribution of different size classes, on the distribution of biomass and on the primary and secondary production; (g) to observe how seasonal variations in the intensity of turbulence in thin layers can affect the structure of the planktonic community; (h) to check as relief contributes to planktonic productivity in the surrounding oceanic islands and continental slope; (i) to identify which of the main environmental factors or combination of factors, which act in the distribution of plankton (turbulence, temperature, salinity, light, nutrients, chlorophyll) better explains the distribution of planktonic organisms; (j) to check whether and how the vertical migration of zooplankton is related to the deep peak chlorophyll; and how many zooplankton groups relate to the same during their migration.
