Dr. Cristiano Cavalcante has a distinguished career in operational research, and maintenance modeling. During his BSc in mechanical engineering, he explored reliability and maintenance modeling modules. After that, he obtained his MSc and PhD degrees in operational research, focusing on probabilistic models, maintenance, and decision support models, and giving special attention to decision problems involving reliability, risk, maintenance and safety aspects.
Cristiano’s focus in postdoctoral research at the University of Salford was on maintenance modeling, which led to a greater understanding of the field. Currently serving as a Full Professor in Operational Research, Maintenance Engineering, and Logistics at the Department of Management Engineering/Industrial Engineering at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil.
Cristiano was awarded his Ph.D. in 2005. Since 2009, the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) has acknowledged him as a Research Fellowship Grantee for Productivity in Research for Multicriteria Decision Models for Maintenance Problems. He has published more than 60 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, addressing diverse areas such as Operational Research, Probabilistic Models, Maintenance Modeling, Risk, Reliability, Safety, and more.
Professor Cavalcante’s leadership skills have been demonstrated through his position as board member of the INFORMS Multiple Criteria Decision Making Section (2020-2022), senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications (IMA) in the UK. Additionally, he leads the research group RANDOM, which focuses on risk and decision analysis in operations and maintenance at UFPE.
Cristiano’s impact transcends academia by actively connecting academia and industry. By voluntarily leading a project to encourage collaboration, he has brought together many companies from different sectors to promote the practical application of mathematical models to solve real-world challenges.
His dedication to practical applications is proven by his successful supervision of postdoctoral fellows with Ph.D. degrees. and MSc students, and the completion of numerous projects awarded by the Brazilian National Research Council since 2010. Cristiano is currently spearheading two major projects, CAPES-COFECUB and CAPESPRINT, aiming to position UFPE among the world’s leading institutions in areas such as Organizational Information Systems, Reliability Engineering, Maintenance and Risk Management, Optimization of Systems and Production Processes, and Planning and Management of Production Systems.
Dr. Cristiano Cavalcante’s research, leadership, and commitment to solving real-world problems continue to leave an indelible mark on both academia and industry.
